Participation Matters: Celebrating Occupational Therapy Month 2026

Every October, OT Works! celebrates Occupational Therapy (OT) Month, recognizing the dedicated Occupational Therapists who help people reconnect with the activities, routines, and roles that make life meaningful. From returning to work after an injury to maintaining independence at home, occupational therapy supports people in participating more fully in the lives they want to lead.

Participation Matters: The 2026 Theme

This year, the World Federation of Occupational Therapists (WFOT) has chosen “Participation Matters” as the theme for World Occupational Therapy Day on October 27, 2026.

The theme highlights how everyday activities, roles, and routines contribute to our health, well-being, and quality of life. It also recognizes that participation can look different for everyone. The things that give one person purpose may be very different from what matters to another.

Occupational Therapists (OTs) work alongside clients to address the physical, cognitive, emotional, environmental, and social factors that can affect their ability to participate in meaningful activities. Through individualized, evidence-based care, OTs help people overcome barriers, build skills, adapt to change, and reconnect with the things that matter most to them.

Participation isn’t just about being able to do something. It’s about having the opportunity, confidence, and support to take part in activities that bring purpose, connection, and fulfilment to everyday life.

“Our quality of life is shaped by how we spend our time. OT supports clients to maintain meaning in their lives and find the balance that’s right for them, even in the face of change or adversity”.

Pamela Russell, Clinical Director, OT Works!

What Does ‘Participation Matters’ Look Like in Occupational Therapy?

Occupational therapy recognizes that our daily activities are closely connected to our sense of identity, independence, and well-being. When injury, illness, disability, or life changes disrupt those activities, an Occupational Therapist can help clients find practical ways to move forward.

Participation-focused occupational therapy may include:

  • Returning to work: Developing strategies, modifying tasks, and building confidence to support a safe and sustainable return to employment.
  • Managing physical challenges: Finding new ways to complete everyday tasks following an injury, surgery, or the onset of a health condition.
  • Supporting mental health: Establishing meaningful routines, managing stress, and rebuilding engagement in activities that promote emotional well-being.
  • Maintaining independence at home: Adapting home environments and daily activities to support safety, accessibility, and autonomy.
  • Reconnecting with community and leisure: Finding ways to return to hobbies, social activities, family roles, and community participation.
  • Navigating life transitions: Developing new strategies and routines when circumstances change, helping clients maintain a sense of purpose and balance.

Every person’s goals are unique. For one client, participation may mean returning to a demanding career. For another, it may mean preparing a favourite meal, spending time with family, or feeling confident enough to leave home and reconnect with their community.

At OT Works!, we believe meaningful progress starts by understanding what matters to each client. By working collaboratively and focusing on individual goals, our Occupational Therapists help people find practical, achievable ways to participate in the activities that shape their lives.

OT Works! – Supporting Participation Across BC

At OT Works!, we’re proud of our team of dedicated Occupational Therapists who support clients across British Columbia. Our therapists are registered with the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC (CHCPBC) and bring experience in a broad range of clinical areas, including:

  • Physical rehabilitation
  • Mental health care
  • Brain injury recovery
  • Functional capacity evaluations
  • Return-to-work planning and support
  • Everyday function, independence, and activity adaptation

We serve clients throughout the Lower Mainland, Fraser Valley, Sea-to-Sky region, and Vancouver Island, providing individualized, evidence-based, and compassionate care.

Our approach begins with listening to each client’s story, understanding their priorities, and identifying the barriers that may be affecting their participation. From there, we work together to develop strategies that support meaningful progress, whether the goal is returning to work, managing daily responsibilities, or reconnecting with valued activities.

Because participation matters, we believe care should reflect the individual—not just their diagnosis or injury. Our goal is to help clients build on their strengths, navigate challenges, and move toward a life that feels meaningful to them.
